Pick the winning teams each Saturday - Be the Poolie with the most correct wins... & you win the Pool.
Basics
- Begins on the first Saturday of November & covers most Saturdays thru the end of season.
- Each Saturday has its own PGP card to be completed.
- One time entry fee of $40 is due by second Saturday of November.
- Deadline for each PGP Card is 1:00 pm on the given Saturday.
- Every PGP Card submitted requires a date/time stamp.
- PGP Card can be completed online.
- Hardcopy PGP Cards (or reasonable facsimile) are accepted. If scanned (or photo), then emailed/texted.
How to partake in this Pool
- Register prior to Nov’s first Saturday, can be done via email. Knowing possible participants before hand, is greatly appreciated.
- Optionally, you register with your first submitted PGP entry.
- There’s a late-entry date to join if you miss the first Sat. You complete the 2nd Sat’s Card & accept a pre-set score for that first Sat.
- With each register & entry, Poolie names are added to ‘Standings’ page. So we all know the number of participants.
- If curious as to how many Poolies there might be partaking, you can ask me or check the Standings list.
- Deadlines are always 1:00 pm on the given Saturday.
- Your information is never posted or shared. Only your Poolie name is posted online.
How to fill-out the PGP Card
Online:
- Go to the Online PGP Card web-page.
- Select the radio-button adjacent the team you think will win. Note that all visitor teams are selected by default.
- Include the total goals scored (all teams & games combined on that Sat).
- Your name & email address is only required the one time. The first Sat. All future cards need only your Poolie name.
- When finished, click the ‘Submit’. The web-page will instantly refresh & display your picks.
Right click anywhere on the page and do save-as (for your own records). The fact you see your picks, confirms they have been received & logged.
A snap-shot is taken of every entry and posted on the Poolies Picks web-page, each Saturday ~noon~1:00.
Hardcopy:
- Any reasonable facsimile with easy to read team names.
- Add a mark (‘X”) only beside the team you think may win.
- Include the total goals scored (all teams & games combined on that Sat).
- Add your Poolie-Name (always use the same Poolie-Name) .
- Scan or take photo and email it to me. This creates a date time-stamp.
About Tie-Breaker
- Total goals means both visitors & home teams’ goals combined. Tie-breakers are recorded for the entire season.
- If a tie-breaker is required for any individual Saturday, only that individual Saturday’s tie-breaker is used, to confirm the winner.
- Tie-breaker for individual Saturdays goes to the closest (over/under) to actual total goals scored on that Saturday.
If a tie still remains, the Poolie who is ‘under’ gets the win. If still tied, prize &/or points are shared on that Saturday.
- If a tie-breaker is required for the final standings, all the Sat tie-breakers (thru-out the season) are totalled & used, to confirm the winner.
- Tie-breaker for the final standings goes to the closest (over/under) to total goals scored over the season.
- If a tie still remains the Poolie who is ‘under’ gets the win. If still tied, prize is shared.
The Pool Money This section was updated to reflect the number of participants
- A one-time entry fee of $40.00 gives you approx 21 Saturday picks.
- A $20.00 website fee is deducted from total entry fees. Remaining $$$ goes to prizes, to you.
This 2021-22 season has _22 23 (including late entries Nov 13) Poolies X $40 = $920 and therefore a cash prizes pot of $900 .
If 2 more Poolies partake Nov 13, their entries will mean 1 extra PGP Cash Card included and $40 added to 1st place prize making it $620.
Prizes (after deduction)
The following figures are adjusted accordingly as per the number of participants. The amounts below will basically confirmed by the second Saturday of November.
qty 5 Saturdays pay instant cash of $40 to the Poolie with most correct wins on PGP Cash Card Saturdays, for a total $200 (for the season). see calendar
qty 1 Saturdays pay instant cash of $20 to the Poolie with most correct wins on this single PGP Sat, Feb 29. All cash Sat’s now total $220 (for the season).
$580 + $20 goes to 1st place overall (most correct wins for the season).
$600 1st place prize increased by $20 (ref 1 single late entry Poolie).
$80 goes to 2nd place overall (most correct wins for the season). This amount was decided, based upon second place winning $40 and getting their $40 entry fee back as well.
Winners & Money
Winners of Instant PGP Cash and of the final standings Cash are contacted individually (within 1-2 days) of the winning dates and arrangements made so they quickly receive their cash prizes.
However it happens you miss the first Saturday but want to partake. You complete the 2nd Sat of the Pool and continue like everyone else. The first Sat’s results (for you) will be as per the preset defaults. All visitor teams are selected and the total goals score = 40.
Postponed = Cancelled
Any Saturday scheduled game postponed until a later date, is considered void (cancelled), regardless which team was picked to win. The rescheduled game is considered a completely new game, on whichever day of the week it lands.
Any Saturday game or group of Saturday games cancelled, and no later dated intended, are considered void. If the total number of cancelled games reduces the predetermined number of PGP Sat Cards by quantity 3 or more, prizes will not be awarded, based on that predetermined number of PGP Cards. Partial prizes and discounts will be provided; so to have closure to an unfinished season.
Poolies are solely responsible for monitoring games that can be or have been postponed, when completing PGP Cards. More specifically total number of goals score on the respective Saturday. For example if 12 games are scheduled and 2 are postponed, a Poolie may consider a lower number of total goals scored (qty 10 vs qty 12). Note: All Poolies have the option of resubmitting their PGP Cards regardless the reason. Any resubmitted Card must abide by the 1:00 pm deadline.
The NHL updated schedule, has taken advantage of the originally paused schedule for the Olympics. Although this means 2 (February) Saturdays now have games being played; the HNIC PGP Calendar remains as is. The number of games do not warrant a PGP Card; which is usually a minimum 9 games.
Other schedule updates to already PGP scheduled games, will be revised accordingly.
Because this seasons’ schedule is a bit of a mess, Poolies should regularly double check both the NHL and THENHLJL for last minute modifications.
If you want to take a snap-shot of Poolies picks, particularly on the current Saturday (for your own records), please feel free. I recommend waiting until some time after the 1:00 pm deadline. This way you include any late entries (close to 1:00 pm), Poolies re-submitting their initial picks and late postings/uploads.
You can do a screen capture or <right-click> anywhere on the page & do <save-as>.
Note:
PGP Card entry deadline is 1:00 pm on the related Saturday. At 1:00 pm the Submit Button is disabled. However some Poolies’ browsers may be set to use local cache first; which could allow them to select/click and submit at a time after 1:00 pm. If this sends a late entry, that entry is flagged (as being after 1:00 pm). Immediately the entry is examined for how detrimental and unfavourable it could be with respect to the overall pool. Each are examined on a case by case basis. Therefore some late entries might be accepted but they should never be expected.
A simple rule of thumb will consider a few seconds late being ‘ok’ yet a few minutes late being ‘not ok’.
Every effort is made to ensure this pool is fair and honest, and included with this effort is the importance of Poolies having an enjoyable experience while participating. This simply means flagged entries are not automatically void but in most case are void.
Each entry and it’s date time-stamp is verified, prior to acceptance, and posting. Every flagged entry is posted here with proper explanation of why it was accepted or not accepted.
If any Poolie questions an entry they are encouraged to review this page and contact the pool for additional explanations and clarity.
Everyone should have fun while partaking in any thenhljl hockey pool.
- Nov 20: Posted notice that reminders will not be sent out to those who have possibly forgotten to submit their picks.
- Dec 04: Poolie ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ picks came in 56 secs after deadline. Online form had expired but the server had not completely refreshed (at 1:00 pm). Therefore Poolie was able to submit via cached data on their browser. Their submitted card was accepted. After all. only 56 secs late & no game had officially started at that time.
In future when the online card does expire at 1:00 pm, the server will be set to instantly refresh, preventing use of the form even with cached data. However this is not an exact-science and time-servers fall in suit. Computers and human intervention do not equate to perfection. Please ask questions. Never be unsure about any aspect of any hockey pool on thenhljl.com.
- Jan 16: Poolie reported errors with Jan 15 standings report. One item checked confirmed an error therefore the full standings report was rechecked. Standings have been re-uploaded replacing the previous. A copy of the previous is posted below.
Reminder to all Poolies to help ensure no errors go undetected, by regularly checking themselves. Note the standings (and all report statistics) are rechecked on the last day of the season to ensure all is correct. This is done visually and by using custom MS Excel formulas and calculations.
- Jan 22: Poolie ‘CrappoKakko’ picks came in 3 secs after deadline. Online form had expired but these few seconds were not a sufficient deterrent with the entry being submitted. This is 3 seconds late. This entry was accepted. If anyone has question or concern please contact thenhljl hnic pgp.
- Jan 30: Duplicate cards (same Pooliename) were found. One was an “auto/default” card, the other a regular submitted card. The submitted card was correct but the auto default card had the wrong Pooliename. These auto-cards are done manually at deadline. Identifying those who did not submit. This error was mine. I had entered the wrong Pooliename. When double checked, the missing 23rd pooliename was updated. Both Cards were confirmed with date time-stamp, one being prior to deadline the other simply not submitted. This error/item did not have any effect to points on this Sunday.
- Feb 26: Game #4 was initially scheduled for Feb 26 7:00pm DET at TOR. This was updated during the season but not noticed and corrected (by thenhljl) until Feb 26th. Any Poolie selecting “Home-TOR” to win will be accepted as selecting “Home or Visit = TOR”. The same will be with DET. Any Poolie who forgets or chooses not to submit on Feb 26th, will have “Visit-TOR” as the default for game #4.
- Mar 05: Duplicate of Poolie ‘Liddo’ entry was posted by mistake. This gave a false count of 23 entries and so 1 entry was missed. Once noted the 23rd Poolie missing was added. This was an auto-all-defaults-entry for Poolie Mike & M (did not or forgot to submit). Note that this last auto-all-defaults-entry makes for qty 8 for Mar 05.
