Information
A hockey pool where you predict the winning teams of Saturday NHL games & win ca$h for the most correct wins.
The 2019-20 NHL HNIC PGP Pool
… begins on the first Saturday of November & covers most Saturdays thru the end of season.
- Each Saturday has its own PGP card to be completed.
- One time entry fee of $40 is due by second Saturday of November.
- Deadline for each PGP Card is 1:00pm on the given Saturday.
- Every PGP Card submitted requires a date/time stamp.
- PGP Card can be completed online or downloaded (then attached & emailed).
- A hardcopy PGP Card (or reasonable facsimile) can be completed if scanned or a photo taken.
- A photo or scan can be submitted via email or text-msg. (this provides the date/time stamp).
How to partake in this Pool
- You join/register with the November first Saturday PGP Card. Letting me know before then, is greatly appreciated.
- There’s a grace period for joining if you miss the first Saturday. You complete the second Sat PGP Card & accept a pre-set score for the first Sat.
The pre-set score of the missed (first) PGP Card is approx 20% of the total games, as number of wins.
- With each register/commitment, Poolie names are added to this website’s ‘Standings’ page; so we all have an idea the number of participants.
- If curious as to how many Poolies there might be partaking, you can check the Standings list.
- Deadlines are always 1:00pm on the given Saturday.
- Your information is never posted or shared. Only your Poolie name is used online.
How to fill-out the PGP Card [see instruction diagram below]
Hardcopy:
- You can download a hardcopy (PDF) or ask me for one.
- Verify the correct card for the date.
- Add a mark (‘X”) only beside the team you think may win.
- Include the tie-breaker number. Your guess of the total goals to be scored, all games combined.
- Add your Poolie-Name (always use the same Poolie-Name) and hand in the card.
- A photo of the hard copy is always taken. This creates a date time-stamp.
Online:
- Go to the Online PGP Card web page.
- Select the radio-button adjacent the team name, you think will win. Note that all visitor teams are selected by default.
- Enter the tie-breaker of total goals (visitor + home goals) and then your Poolie name. If you haven’t previously, enter your full name & a valid email.
- Your name & email address is only required the one time. All future cards need only your Poolie name.
- When finished, click the ‘Submit’ button. The web page will instantly refresh & display your picks.
Right click anywhere on the page and do save-as (for your own records). The fact you see your picks confirms they have been received & logged.
A snap-shot photo is taken of every entry, and posted on the site’s Poolies Picks page, each Saturday monring.
About Tie-Breaker
- Total goals means both visitors & home teams’ goals combined. Tie-breakers are recorded for the entire season.
- If a tie-breaker is required for any individual Saturday, only that individual Saturday’s tie-breaker is used, to confirm the winner.
- Tie-breaker for individual Saturdays goes to the closest (over/under) to actual total goals scored on that Saturday.
If a tie still remains, the Poolie who is ‘under’ gets the win. If still tied, prize is shared.
- If a tie-breaker is required for the final standings, all the Saturdays’ tie-breakers thru-out the season are totalled & used, to confirm the winner.
- Tie-breaker for the final standings goes to the closest (over/under) to total goals scored over the season.
- If a tie still remains the Poolie who is ‘under’ gets the win. If still tied, prize is shared.
The Pool Money
- A one-time entry fee of $40.00 gives you approx 21 Saturday picks.
- A $20.00 website fee is deducted from total entry fees. Remaining $$$ goes to prizes, to you.
This 2019/20 season has 20 Poolies X $40 = $800 and therefore a cash prize’s pot of $780.
Prizes (after deduction)
The following figures are adjusted accordingly as per the number of participants. The amounts below will basically confirmed by the second Saturday of November.
Five Saturdays pay instant cash of $40 to the Poolie with most correct wins on the Saturday, for a total $200 (for the season).
$500 goes to 1st place overall in the standings (most correct wins for the season).
$80 goes to 2nd place overall in the standings (most correct wins for the season).
Winners & Money
Winners of Instant PGP Cash and of the final standings Cash are contacted individually (within 1-2 days) of the winning dates and arrangements made so they quickly receive their cash prizes.

Q: Can I see everyone’s picks
A: Yes each entry is posted online.
Q: I can’t download the PGP card for some reason (before deadline).
A: Complete a reasonable facsimile of your picks; take a photo and send to me by email or txt. Please inform me about the download problem so I can fix before the next Sat PGP card.
Q: How are the entries displayed
A: The quickest (most efficient) means of displaying everyone’s picks, is posting an image of each.
Q: How do I know no one’s picks are changed or tampered with.
A: Everyone’s picks for the Saturday are posted online so anyone can check; as well take a snap-shot of the web page, so to compare at various times for any discrepancies. The results (standings) are also updated and posted after each Saturday, therefore available for comparison with all entry picks.
Q: What if I forget to submit one of the Saturday’s picks.
A: If you forget - the web site automatically submits a PGP Card for you. With all of the visitor teams selected.and the number ‘40’ for total goals.
Q: What if I forget to submit all of my Saturday’s picks.
A: If you forget - the web site automatically submits a PGP Card for every Saturday, for you. With all of the visitor teams selected.and the number ‘40’ for total goals. Yes it would be interesting & surprising if you fair out well, with wins-losses.
Q: What if I miss or overlook a game and no mark is adjacent either team?
A: If a hard copy, that game will automatically be recorded as a loss. If online every game (by default) has the visiting team marked to win. Still a concern? Resubmit & use ‘comments’ field to explain.
Q: What if I miss or overlook the tie-breaker number?
A: Your tie-breaker number will be recorded as ‘40’. Other tie-breaker rules will still apply.
Q: What if an unintentional hindrance occurs & I submit my picks after the 1:00pm deadline?
A: This is looked at on a case by case basis and only upon request. After all an automated Card would have been submitted.
These factors are considered; 1. What hindrance? 2. Time of request for submission. 3. Have any games started. 4. Is it fair?
Q: I checked the box and entered my email address but did not get my PGP Card Receipt or it came hours later?
A: 1** Entries are received via email which responds to set/matched settings & if these settings differ in anyway the recipient isn’t smart enough to adjust, which is the most common delay or no-response. 2** The recipient doesn’t sync its email as you or I would. It syncs’ to a responders settings which may be hours between syncs. 3** Entries are received with the ‘box’ checked but the email address is blank &/or not a valid address (spelling errors?). 4** I’m always messing about with email responders so maybe I’m the problem. 5** Regardless what occurs, eventually the system sends me a msg telling me there was a glitch or all is good. If I see a glitch I force the responder. 6** All of the above happens over a 10min to 8hour period. 7** BTW, at any time any Poolie can ask me to send them ‘any’ entry receipt ever submitted.
Q: The web site is posting a “http://” URL & not a “https://” URL. Does this mean un-secure & I should be concerned?
A: The missing “s” tells you the site is un-secure but this relates to E-Commerce (buying & selling of goods or services over the Internet). My site is a ‘hobby’ and a ‘non-profit’ site. Site visitors and myself do not buy & sell via this web site. Visitors never submit personal info and credit cards. Therefore I have postponed updating the site to “https://” simply because it costs me more money to do so. Until I do, there is no need to be concerned with regards to un-secure.

(This information is continually updated throughout the entire time of the hockey pool, in this case the entire NHL season 19/20)
ISSUES/ERRORS
Regardless the issue… it is recorded and reported here.
Nov 7 (01): Number of Poolies was 19 pre-Nov 3 and is now 20 post-Nov 3. The 20th Poolie was given 3 wins & 11 loses to represent Nov 2.
Nov 9 (02): Saturday 8:00pm Poolies Picks page wasn’t displaying all snap-shots of all pgp-cards. Each snap shot place-marker was indicated but not all pics. The page source was checked to confirm all was as it should be. A screen shot of this was taken for record and future reference. All was re-uploaded just in case the issue was manual but the page didn’t change. All was uploaded again after all history and cache had been cleared from local PC & server. All displayed properly after this. (see screen shots below)
Different browsers did display different images but only slightly. Still not sure what occurred or if anyone else was ‘seeing’ things different on their end. Screen shots were taken of both online & local pages and email receipts of entries; to have on record. If anyone has question or concern pls ask and I can provide this details.
A screen shot will be taken, following each Poolie-Page upload, so confirmation can be quickly produced if this ever happens again.
Nov 16 (03): Poolie ‘CRUSHER DAN’ submitted their picks, a photo of a hardcopy entry, before deadline, but at that time I read the latest txt msg only. This 2nd msg showed a photo of Nov 23 picks. So his Nov 16 entry was submitted automatically; as all visitors & tie-breaker set at 40.
I was informed late afternoon that two txt msgs were sent to me. Nov 16 & Nov 23. The poolie’s entry-snap-shot has been uploaded & noted.
Nov 17 (04): Poolie ‘TODS FOLLIES’ wins & loses read 6W’s & 3L’s for Nov 9th, 11 game Saturday. This was noted & corrected this morning. The standings now show 6 wins & 5 loses.
Dec 01 (05): Two Poolies reported their wins-count was wrong by “1” win. After checking, a recount was done and more than 2 Poolies win count was short 1. It looks like the reason for this big-oops is the Pitts vs St.Louis game.
How are the games checked vs who picked what?? Well to keep it brief; an image is moved about over everyone’s picks. This is to make it quick & simple to confirm how many wins each Poolie has. Loses are not counted as they are calc’d by the difference between total games & the remaining number is loses. Regardless, the Pitts vs ST Louis game was overlooked.
This made most of the counts incorrect. All has been re-counted and double checked. Changes have been made to everyone's wins so that all is 100% good to go.
What we all see now as of Dec 3rd 8:30pm is the adjusted (correct) counts and standings from Nov 30th PGP Picks.
For further info, see photos below (for an illustration of who was corrected and who was not needing correction). If anyone has any concern, issue, questions etc… pls get in touch.
Also this is a perfect reminder that we all should ensure a due-diligence is maintained by checking a second time who won and who didn’t. These recounts occur half way thru the season and at end of season. I’m confident this “oops” would have been eventually flagged & fixed.
Jan 05 (06): Poolie ‘CRUSHER DAN’ submitted their picks, a hardcopy entry, and a photo was taken for date/time-stamp. The photo was uploaded to ‘Poolie’s Pick’ page but the wrong one. It was a photo of a previous entry. This was spotted Jan 5 morning and corrected. Pick below confirms entry and date/time-stamp.
Jan 19 (07): Poolie ‘OTTAWA JOE’ was credited ‘7’ wins & ‘5’ losses (of 12 games). They reported this as an error, therefore his card was check again to count wins & losses. OTTAWA JOE is correct. The second count was 8-wins & 4-loses. This has been corrected and the standings have been updated accordingly. This is another flag, a reminder for poolies to do some recounts themselves. Everyone reviewing the pool & pool stats helps to quickly fix the oops.
Mar 01 (08): Poolie ‘CRUSHER DAN’ submitted pics (photo via txt w/ date time stamp). Photo was uploaded to Poolie’s Picks page but the wrong one (again). It was a photo of a previous entry (again). This was spotted Mar 1st morning and corrected. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Pick below confirms entry and date/time-stamp.
